<正> 图书馆作为一种社会机构,至少已经存在两千六百年了——比大学的历史长三倍。值得注意的是,人们已知的最早的图书馆——公元前七世纪建于尼尼微的亚述巴尼拔图书馆——所起的基本作用与当今的图书馆并无二致。它(一)在已知的世界范围內刻意收集文字材料;(二)将它们按主题编目和分类;(三)以誊写的方式保存记录;(四)利用它们回答国王的问题(参考);(五)为国王和少数其他高级官员提供读物(流通)。
